After several days of demonstrations in the faculties, the medical students were received by the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Kamel Baddari.

Six measures were taken during this meeting which brought together student representatives, directors of medical faculties and deans of universities across the country, according to a press release from the Ministry of Higher Education published on Saturday evening.

On the agenda of the meeting which lasted more than seven hours, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:33 p.m., the demands posed by future Algerian doctors, including employment, the authentication of the diplomas of doctors who want to go to work or continue their studies abroad and pedagogy.

Authentication of doctors’ diplomas: a platform for identifying candidates

According to the ministry, six decisions were taken during this meeting. These are:

· Increase in the number of specialty positions from 3,045 to 4,045

· Define December 15, 2024, as the latest deadline for submitting the international accreditation file

· Form a working group made up of representatives of students from faculties of medical sciences, executives from the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, in order to make proposals on increasing the scholarship and its amount as well as other concerns of the parties involved.

· Freezing of article 9 of decision 1144 which defines the conditions of access to specialty studies, in anticipation of its amendment

· Census of candidates for diploma authentication via a digital platform, with the formation of a working group to make proposals on this issue

· Support for student demands at the local level. The date of October 27 was set as the latest deadline for the various groups to begin work to address the complaints of medical school students.

This meeting comes after several days of protests in medical faculties in Algeria.

Medical students are essentially demanding more jobs, since unemployment now affects many Algerian doctors who are struggling to find employment in the country’s hospital structures, and the lifting of the freeze on diploma authentication for those who want to leave. abroad to continue their studies or work. This measure was taken a few months ago to stop the exodus of Algerian doctors abroad.
