A city in a state of emergency

Kherson is a contested theater of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The city was under Russian occupation for several months. Of the 290,000 people who once lived there, around 30,000 to 40,000 residents still live in the city, which is subject to a nighttime curfew.

According to a report by journalist Caolan Robertson, who recently released a half-hour documentary on the city, Kherson residents are hiding under trees as much as possible to avoid drone attacks. These offer people a certain level of protection, as targets are no longer clearly visible to pilots. At the moment, it is still unclear how the residents of Kherson will protect themselves from attacks in winter, when the trees lose their leaves.
