“Sanctuary” by authors Sho Fumimura and Ryoichi Ikegami, talks about the crazy rise of a young political wolf. In high school, Chiaki Asami and Akira Hojo have a dream: to fundamentally change Japan. They come to the conclusion that change can only come through political power and the post of Prime Minister. One of them will be a politician, in the light, the other will become a yakuza to help him in the shadows. After having defined their role at the chifoumi, Chiaki will be the politician and Akira the yakuza.
In the biopic “The Apprentice”, we learn that Donald Trump was mentored by controversial lawyer Roy Cohn. Hence the title “The Apprentice”. It’s a bit the same for our two protagonists who will cut their teeth with a political baron and the head of a yakuza clan. Like Trump who did not hesitate to betray his mentor, the duo will do the same and will even cause his downfall by blackmailing him.
Betrayal, manipulation, double manipulation, dirty tricks, murders, drug sex and rock’n’roll, we no longer know where to turn in this manga. Chiaki and Akira are in a hurry, they have no time to waste and even less morals. Sanctuary is published by Glénat in 6 collections of 460 pages, at €14.95 per volume.
