Rijk Zwaan Ibérica’s new Orange-fleshed watermelon variety, sweet, juicy and full of flavor, won an award at the Innovation Hub Awards 2024 in the Fresh Produce category. These awards recognize and promote R&D efforts in the agri-food sector. The ceremony took place on Thursday October 10 in the Fruit Forum space of Ifema.
Alberto Cuadrado, Head of Chain Projects at Rijk Zwaan Ibérica, presented the application to a jury of industry professionals, including Ana Díaz Pérez, Deputy Director General for Food Quality and Sustainability at the Ministry of Agriculture , Fisheries and Food; Alejandro Lorca Ruiz, Deputy Director General of Fruits, Vegetables and Viticulture; Agustín Palma Barriga, Deputy Assistant Director General for Food Safety Management at the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN); Rubén Moratiel Yungueros, university professor and researcher at CEIGRAM – Department of Agricultural Production. Fitotecnia – Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Agronómica, Alimentaria y Biosistemas – Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM); and Luis B. Martín Martín, technical director of FEPEX.
Alberto Cuadrado highlighted: “Data indicates that the consumption of traditional fruits among young consumers is decreasing in favor of more modern fruits such as red fruits or tropical fruits like mango, and it is in this trend that Sunglow is positioned to connect with new consumers. »

Rijk Zwaan has developed a fun and refreshing new watermelon variety that offers a unique drinking experience. Its oval shape and unusual skin color give it a distinctive character. Its dark orange interior offers exceptional versatility. Its crispy and tasty texture gives it an exquisite taste. Its practical size, between 2.5 and 3.5 kilos, is suitable for families’ new eating habits.
Production locale
Orange Sunglow is a project, currently limited in volume and surface area to Spain. The companies Pozo Sur, Única, Anecoop, Caparrós and Jimbo Fresh are participating.
