COMMEMORATION OF INTERNATIONAL DISASTER REDUCTION DAY (IDPC), October 13, 2024.

THEME: “giving the next generation the means to build a resilient future”

MESSAGE FROM THE MINISTER OF HUMANITARIAN ACTION AND NATIONAL SOLIDARITY.

PRESIDENT OF THE NATIONAL EMERGENCY RELIEF AND REHABILITATION COUNCIL (CONASUR)

The United Nations General Assembly, by resolution A/RES/64/200 of December 21, 2009, established October 13 as the date of commemoration of the International Day for Disaster Reduction. The objective of this day is to demonstrate the progress made by decision-makers and grassroots communities to reduce disaster risk and loss of life, but also to increase livelihoods and essential infrastructure.

This year, the international community has chosen to commemorate the day under the theme: “giving the next generation the means to build a resilient future”.

This theme is of capital importance in that it will allow:

to establish education linked to disaster risk reduction;

to protect children and young people against the harmful effects of disasters;

to strengthen the preparedness of children and young people for disasters;

to prepare a new generation that is well-informed and resilient in the face of disaster risks.

Our country, Burkina Faso, is repeatedly confronted with the risk of disasters of natural or anthropogenic origin. Indeed, each year, floods and violent winds cause multiple damages to the lives of many people and families, and even entire communities, in several localities in the thirteen (13) regions of the country.

The Government implements activities with the support of its technical and financial partners, aimed at involving local authorities and communities in the prevention and reduction of the risks of disasters and humanitarian crises.

While reiterating my thanks to all the partners who support our country’s daily efforts in reducing disaster risks, I would like to appeal to all humanitarian actors, civil society and the private sector to take better care of take into account the needs of young people and children in their disaster risk reduction and management strategies in Burkina Faso.

I invite each Burkinabè to develop personally and at the community level, eco-citizen behaviors aimed at reducing the risks of disasters in our country with a view to giving new generations the chance to build a resilient future.

Happy commemoration of the International Day for Disaster Reduction to all.

GOD BLESS BURKINA FASO!

Thank you

NANDY SOME DIALLO
