The debates around gas have created a real cacophony within the government. While Agnès Pannier-Runacher, the Minister of Ecological Transition and Energy, had announced an amendment to increase taxes on gas, this is not the case. In any case, this is what Maud Bregeon, the government spokesperson, indicated on BFM TV on Sunday October 13, 2024. “There will be no increase in taxes on gas, that is the government position,” she announced. “This tax, the TICGN, doubled at the start of last year. If we increased this tax again at the start of 2025, it is the French who would pay the full brunt of the increase in this tax, which is not the case electricity because prices have fallen,” she explained. Gas will therefore be taxed less than electricity.

While gas is a less green energy than electricity, it may seem contradictory that it is less taxed. The spokesperson explained the reasons. “The energy transition must be accepted and acceptable and it cannot happen through money that we would take from the pockets of the French.
