This Lord of the Rings Actor Won’t Return

While actors like Elijah Wood et Ian McKellen would be delighted to reprise their roles in the next films in the saga of Lord of the Ringsstarting with The Hunt of Gollumother veterans of the adaptation of the works of JRR Tolkien are a little more reluctant about the idea of returning to Middle-earth. This is particularly the case of Hugo Weavingthe interpreter of Elrond the Half-Elf in the films of the fantasy saga, to whom Robert Aramayo succeeded in The Rings of Power. In an interview with GamesRadarWeaving spoke about his current projects, such as the series Slow Horses which he is on display, but also about his past as an Elf.

“Personally, I’ve had enough of it. It was great going to New Zealand on and off for about ten years. Then I went back to work with the same team (director Peter Jackson and screenwriter Fran Walsh ) on a project called Mortal Engines that was going to be their next big franchise, but it was nipped in the bud. So I’m sick of Middle Earth and I don’t imagine anyone would ask me to do it again.”

Visibly, Hugo Weaving has fond memories of his time in New Zealand with Peter Jackson and the entire team of films based on the novels of Tolkien. But unlike Viggo Mortensenthe interpreter of Aragorn in the original trilogy who would be ready to embark on a new adventure to find Gollum, the Australian-British actor has had his dose: Hugo Weaving does not want to take on the mantle of Elrond again, and he has good reason.

Hugo Weaving has his reasons (and they are valid)

In his interview, Weaving confirms that he has no desire to return to Middle-earth, and that even if he really wanted to, he hardly saw how that could be possible. Indeed, his character having chosen immortality by becoming a (Semi-)Elf, Elrond is not supposed to age. However, almost 23 years have passed since the release of the first part of the saga, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ringand like any normally constituted human, Hugo Weaving is getting older.

“Elrond is supposed to be immortal and I’m getting old. Elrond is one of the few characters, I think there are only three or four, who appears in The Silmarillion, The Lord of the Rings, and The Hobbit. But even when we came back to reshoot parts of Lord of the Rings, I was aware that I was older than before and shooting stuff for The Hobbit was starting to get a little ridiculous. I loved being part of that. franchise but I have absolutely no plans or desire to be part of it again.”

Hugo Weaving, GamesRadar+

This is what the actor explained to GamesRadar+ by referring not only to the reshoots of the saga films Lord of the Ringsbut above all to its role in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and in the films that followed. Nearly eleven years separate the first Lord of the Rings of the first Hobbitand Weaving admits that he felt a bit ridiculous as Elrond since he had already changed a lot physically by that time. The Hunt for Gollum being a prequel to The Fellowship of the Ring, so it would be difficult to justify Elrond’s aged appearance years before his first appearance, even with a huge special effects budget.
