Argentine Mauricio Pochettino began his tenure as coach of the United States football team with a 2-0 victory on Saturday in Austin (Texas). The former Tottenham, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea coach was recruited last month to take charge of a team which had won only one of its last seven matches.
He will lead the United States through the 2026 World Cup, which it co-hosts with Canada and Mexico. Against the Panamanians, his players won thanks to goals from Yunus Musah (49), the AC Milan midfielder, and Ricardo Pepi (90+4), the PSV Eindhoven striker. “It’s a very good feeling. It was a very, very difficult match for us.said Pochettino.
“We are building something little by little. The target is 2026, but I think we are happy because we have been strong and we have had a very professional performance and we have been competitive. (But) it’s only a first step to improve.”underlined the 52-year-old technician.
His team will face a tougher away test on Tuesday, when they face rivals Mexico in Guadalajara. “El Tri” also recently changed bosses with the return of Javier Aguirre for a third mandate as coach.
