The Pasteur Institute de Lille (North) is internationally recognized for its advances in medical research, particularly in the areas of Alzheimer’s disease, the fight against antibiotic resistance and the development of vaccines. The institution celebrates its 130th anniversary this year. But she is currently going through a serious financial crisis which puts it in danger.
Energy costs and interest rates are exploding
But what is happening at the Pasteur Institute? Since 2015, the Institute had begun an economic recovery. But the financial crisis could not be avoided.
In question, increasing energy costsestimated at 1.2 million euros per year. But also the increase in interest rates linked to loans contracted to finance a major real estate project, for a total amount of 73 million euros.

According to independent expertise, the lack of public funding could lead to a cumulative deficit of 15 million euros by 2030.
The consequences of this crisis are already perceptible, with a reduction in scientific staff of 31% between 2018 and 2023, representing a loss of 36 full-time equivalents.
The City of Lille is committed to actively supporting the “Terre de Chercheurs” campaign, aimed at sustainably mobilizing patronage from businesses in Hauts-de-France, in order to encourage them to invest in the foundation.
She is also asking the State for exceptional support of 3 million euros and the necessary revaluation of the annual subsidy from the Pasteur Institute in Lille, frozen since 2009.
