Scientists David Baker, Demis Hassabis and John Jumper have won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, the prize awarding body announced on Wednesday.

The prize, widely considered one of the most prestigious in the scientific world, is awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and is worth 11 million Swedish crowns ($1.1 million). ($1 = 10.3632 Swedish crowns).

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, half to David Baker “for the computational design of proteins” and the other half jointly to Demis Hassabis and John M. Jumper “for the protein structure prediction,” we can read in an article on X.

Heiner Linke, chairman of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry, said the prize recognized research that unraveled long-standing scientific mysteries. “For decades, this discovery has been called a great challenge in chemistry, and in particular in biochemistry. It is therefore this progress which is being rewarded today,” he declared.

Jumper received his master’s degree in 2012 and his doctorate in 2017 from the University of Chicago. He becomes the 100th researcher associated with the South Side university to receive a Nobel Prize, according to the school.
