Tuesday, September 10, Tunisian lawyer Sonia Dahmani was sentenced on appeal to eight months in prison for comments deemed critical of the President of the Republic, Kaïs Saïed. He is accused of having made irony about the situation in Tunisia on a TV set, asking “ what extraordinary country are we talking about? ».

Support day

During the Council of the Order on Monday October 7, the Saint-Etienne bar decided to support its colleague. Thus, on Thursday October 10, lawyers present at the hearings will be given a red headband to wear on their wrists in all French bars, and a motion will be read before each hearing.

In it, the Order recalls that the lawyer was “ judged without debate, without requisition, and without his lawyers being able to defend his case, in flagrant violation of his right to a fair trial. We denounce the unworthy conditions of his detention, the humiliations suffered and his unfair sentence. We recall that the right to a fair trial requires that each litigant be able to appear before their judges, and we demand the adoption of all necessary measures to guarantee access to justice, respect for the rights of the defense and protection lawyers in the exercise of their mission. This day was not chosen at random, since Sonia Dahmani will appear again before the Tunisian courts in another case, still for crimes of opinion.
