Three people charged with premeditated murder in eastern Newfoundland

The Eastern Newfoundland detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) arrested three people and laid charges of premeditated murder following the discovery of a body in a burned pickup truck.

The accused are Matthew Kavanagh41 ans, Terry Cole34 years old, and Stephanie Noftall28 years old, specifies the corporal Jolene Garland. These three people are also accused of contempt of a human corpse.

They are due to appear in court again on Monday.

The GRC did not provide the identity of the victim, but he is a 42-year-old man, resident of Spaniard’s Bay.

Officers found his remains in the burned van along a dirt road in Bay Roberts.

Someone reported the van on fire on the morning of September 30. It was a Chevrolet Colorado 2021 in blue color.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner last week ruled the man’s death suspicious.

A drug crime

Then, Saturday evening, the GRC surrounded a house, place Gardnerhas Harbour Graceand arrested the three people without incident a few hours later. There GRC deployed a specialized major crimes unit, an emergency response team, explosives experts and other officers, including a dog handler.

The GRC believes it was a targeted gesture, but she does not put forward any possible motive. She suspects the crime is linked to drug abuse. She does not believe he is linked to organized crime.
