Christophe Pélissier: “We concede goals on transitions, we were very bad like the first goal where we are six against four and where they manage to score. It’s impossible to achieve results away when we take three goals each time. We saw a lot of defensive errors and a lot of naive errors. The defeat is there, at 2-1 I felt we could come back and we made another mistake which sealed the match.
We had a huge match last weekend on all fronts (editor’s note, victory against Brest 3-0), Jubal’s injury during the warm-up hurts but that doesn’t explain everything. When it comes to it, I find it difficult to analyze the difference in level from one week to the next. It’s up to me to find solutions to concede fewer goals. We are a team that plays but playing does not mean giving the match to our opponents.
The problem facing teams like Saint-Étienne with a fairly readable game is that we cannot adapt. They avoid pressure by playing long on Sissoko, we have never won the duels on Sissoko or on the second ball behind, from there, the match is hard to read. It’s up to us to adapt, it’s a quality of Sainté to have an axis player who monopolizes the attention, perhaps Jubal would have been efficient in this area.
We’re going to have to really think about our way of playing. We cannot offer all these situations to the opponent. When the public watches Auxerre they are all happy, we never close the game but we get opened up. It’s all well and good to play but in Ligue 1 you need points.”
