Seven months after the Hamas attacks on October 7 and while the government yesterday launched the national conference to combat anti-Semitism, the time for an initial assessment has arrived.
Anti-Semitism on the rise after October 7
The government yesterday launched the national conference to combat anti-Semitism, because since the attack on October 7, there has been an increase in the number of anti-Semitic acts. There were 43 in September 2023, and 563 in October. Olivier Klein, interministerial delegate for the fight against racism, anti-Semitism and anti-LGBT hatred (DILCRAH) discusses these figures: “since January 1, 2024, there have been more than 300 acts, which represents an increase of more than 300% compared to the year 2023 and 400% between 2022 and 2023. All these acts are unbearable, as much as they be, because they weaken our Republic and our foundation of living together.” However, these figures remain underestimated because they only take into account flagrant findings by authorized persons, filings of complaints, handrails, referrals to the public prosecutor’s office.

Education to combat anti-Semitism
Olivier Klein looks back on his missions and those of DILCRAH: “the role of all public authorities and associations is to be active. We must fight, react, punish anti-Semitic acts, but we must first educate, work against prejudice. This is the meaning of DILCRAH’s action, firstly by financing associations, as well as places of history and memory. In the plan that I have to implement, it is planned that each student visits a historical place during their schooling. My job is to create the zero-hate generation of tomorrow.”
