Dortmund and Paris SG were in the same qualifying group for this 2023/2024 UEFA Champions League campaign. In the first match, Luis Enrique’s players managed to win 2-0 at home, before grabbing a 1-1 draw at Signal Iduna Park on the final day. A saving point which allowed them to qualify for the round of 16 of the competition. In the round of 16, Paris SG eliminated Real Sociedad, while Dortmund took out PSV Eindhoven. In the next round, the Parisians defeated FC Barcelona, while the Germans took out Atlético de Madrid. For this first leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-finals, it was Dortmund who hosted Paris SG at Signal Iduna Park. The locals won with a short header thanks to a goal from Niclas Füllkrug in the 36th minute of play. 1-0, but the score could have been more spectacular if both teams had been more efficient in front of goal. The Parisians hit the posts twice in the same action, while there was a big miss on each side, a German player and a Parisian having shot over while they were alone in front of the goal continued to a back pass.
Paris SG must be more effective in both surfaces to aim for the final
Overall, this first leg was rather balanced in terms of statistics. Dortmund shot 13 times for 4 shots on target, while Paris SG made 14 shots for 3 on target. The Ile-de-France club was, however, more dominant in terms of possession, with 58% against 42, and 583 passes to 426. But Edin Terzic’s players were able to be sharper. In particular, they were much more efficient in terms of intensity and duels won. The German midfielder extinguished that of Paris SG, and Luis Enrique failed to reverse the trend by perhaps being a little passive in terms of substitutions, especially in attack. Randal Kolo Muani, disappointing this season, had a very difficult entry where he did not achieve much. Not really better than Bradley Barcola and Ousmane Dembélé, who never really managed to make a difference on the wings. Kylian Mbappé could have scored a ninth goal in the competition, but the amount decided otherwise. Paris SG will have to be more efficient and the attacking trio Barcola – Dembélé – Mbappé will have to be as efficient as in recent weeks. In defense too, Paris will have to be more solid. The goal conceded in the first leg was due to poor defensive alignment. During this action, Lucas Hernandez injured his knee and will be absent for the return match.
