US presidential election: Donald Trump returns to Butler, site of the first assassination attempt against him

A “historic” day. On Saturday, one month before the US presidential election, Republican candidate Donald Trump will hold a political meeting in Butler, Pennsylvania. It was there, on July 13, that the former president was injured in the ear by a shot, which revealed the extreme polarization and unprecedented violence of this campaign for the White House.

On his X account, which he uses again a little, Trump published the photo of himself with his fist raised, a trickle of blood running down his face. “Butler, Saturday – historic,” he wrote, with the photo proclaiming “I’m coming back to Butler.”

On July 13, a young 20-year-old American, Thomas Matthew Crooks, slipped onto the roof of a building at the Butler Fairgrounds, an open-air space where Trump was organizing a major rally, and fired in the direction from the platform, on which the candidate for the White House began his speech against immigration. Bullets from his semi-automatic assault rifle killed one man in the crowd behind the candidate, and seriously injured two others. Trump, who had just turned his head, was slightly injured in the ear but, with a start that his large size made even more impressive, stood straight in the arms of the Secret Service agents who were dragging him towards his armored car, fist raised, shouting “Fight!” Fight! » to his panicked supporters.

Billionaire Elon Musk, Trump’s supporter, responded immediately that he would be present to support him. “He will be there to support,” he wrote in the night on X.

For a long time, the two men did not have a relationship, with Musk voting instead for the Democrats. In 2016, he supported Hillary Clinton against Donald Trump, worried about “the image of the United States”. Trump appointed Musk after his election to an advisory post, but he resigned abruptly a few months later to protest the United States’ withdrawal from the climate agreement. They grew closer at the end of the Republican president’s term, and after the assassination attempt on Butler, the boss of Tesla and Space X confirmed what everyone was observing: his frank and massive support.
