Saint Etienne. Fire in a 13-story building: 28 people evacuated

This Sunday at the end of the day, around 5:40 p.m., around fifty firefighters were mobilized in the Vivaraize district of Saint-Étienne. A fire broke out on the first floor of a building with thirteen floors, in the Pré-des-Sœurs passage.

Ten people taken to hospital

A significant amount of smoke spread into the common areas of the building and into the apartments. In total, 28 people had to be evacuated.

No resident was seriously injured but ten were transported to area hospitals, the university hospital or the HPL, because they had a high level of carbon monoxide in their blood, or for additional examinations.

The fire started from an unoccupied apartment

The fire, which started in an apparently unoccupied apartment, was extinguished in the early evening but its origin remains unknown. The windows of some homes also had to be broken in order to evacuate the smoke.

At 10 p.m., firefighters were still on site clearing the scene.

All residents were able to return to their homes in the evening.
