Ghosts of the past resurfacing. An American bomb dating from the Second World War (1940-1945) exploded this Wednesday, October 2 at Miyazaki airport, in the southwest of Japan, as reported by several media including the American press agency. Associated Press.

In a short video published on the social network X, it is possible to see the explosion immortalized by video surveillance cameras. This caused the appearance of a crater on one of the airport’s taxiways, and caused the cancellation of 80 flights, Japanese authorities indicated.

No injuries were reported and the damage caused to the traffic lane was repaired overnight. According to this same source, the bomb which exploded weighed 227 kilos and all danger now seems to be over. An investigation is currently underway to understand the circumstances of this sudden explosion.

Training ground

As the Associated Press explains, Miyazaki Airport was built in 1943, in the midst of world conflict. It served as a flight training ground for the Imperial Japanese Navy. This is also where some pilots flew from for suicide bombing missions.

In the area, many unexploded American bombs have been found over the past century. Generally speaking, many of them still remain buried throughout Japan.
