Southern Corsica is on orange rain-flood alert this Thursday, October 3, for an episode which should end in the afternoon.

Southern Corsica is placed on orange rain-flood alert this Thursday, October 3 due to an intense rainy episode. Rainstorms hit the island in the early morning, according to the Météo bulletin.

This is rain of “high intensity, of the order of 30 to 40 mm per hour, which can affect the same area for 2 to 3 hours”.

In the event of an orange rain-flood alert, Météo France recommends moving away from watercourses and low points, not taking a submerged road, even partially, not going down into basements and to keep informed of developments in the situation.

Strong accumulations expected

Around 5 a.m., 44.1 mm had already been recorded since the start of the night in Renno, in South Corsica and 40.8 mm had been observed in Asco, in Haute-Corse. Météo France expects in the department “50 to 70 mm widespread, locally 80 to 100 mm in a short time including near the coast, very occasionally a little more”. A little before 7 a.m., emergency services did not have to intervene in Corsica, according to information from BFMTV.

Are we going to experience repeated flooding?

Météo France does not rule out “a few thunderclaps” in the region. “The east of the island, protected by the relief, will receive less water but will still receive 10 to 20 mm, locally 30 to 40,” the organization predicts.

The rains should move towards Italy in the afternoon, with an end of orange alert expected around 1 p.m.
