In the early morning, around 4:50 a.m. this Saturday, May 4, 2024, thick smoke rose from the La Poste sorting center, located on Avenue de l’Industrie at the Polygone Nord in Perpignan. A trailer has just caught fire. The disaster broke out when the packages were unloaded when one of them caught fire. According to initial findings, the latter could have contained an electronic object which would have overheated. No personnel were injured, nor were any rescue forces.
However, if the firefighters mobilized in two fire trucks did not encounter any particular difficulty when extinguishing the flames, they had to call on specific equipment to be handled with agility and safety to reach the packages. Indeed, the tall and narrow trailer contained partitioned spaces, they used a thermal chainsaw to make holes in the compartments and pass their equipment and water through them. A procedure that lasted several hours, although the risk of spread was zero thanks to favorable weather conditions.
Ultimately, both the trailer and the quantity of packages (which could not be estimated) went up in smoke, and the surrounding tarmac was damaged. The activity of La Poste professionals was disrupted for part of the morning. The firefighters completed their task around 10 a.m.
Following this incident, the damage would be difficult to estimate. Information which unfortunately will concern those waiting for a delivery.
