National Seniors Day: The importance of intergenerational connections

This Tuesday, October 1, we celebrate National Seniors Day, which coincides with the United Nations International Day of Older Persons. This day aims to raise public awareness to the realities of seniors, such as aging and mistreatment, as well as to recognize the contribution of people aged 65 and over to our society.

Intergénérations Québec considers it essential to highlight the contribution of seniors to our communities and to position them as an integral part of the community, while ensuring that they are never isolated. For more than 30 years and through diverse initiatives, our organization has strived to remove barriers between generations to build an inclusive, open and supportive society.

Intergenerational, a powerful lever

An approach based on intergenerationalism proves particularly effective in combating isolation, ageism and mistreatment, while giving everyone the place they deserve. Exchanges between generations deconstruct stereotypes and create meaningful experiences that change perceptions. In this sense, intergenerational is a formidable weapon against loneliness and promotes a feeling of community belonging. These meetings promote collective well-being and bring many benefits: new learning, social inclusion, feeling of usefulness, improved health, to name just a few. It is therefore essential that the government integrates this dimension into its policies for seniors and young people.

On the occasion of National Seniors Day, Intergénérations Québec participates in the panel Intergenerational: Share and be inspired to act better together!organized by the Drummondville Seniors Concertation Table. This discussion will highlight the benefits of intergenerational relationships on the well-being of seniors and the adults of tomorrow. The subject of this panel is part of the Quebec government’s action plan on aging, aiming to strengthen links between generations through the development of diversified projects. With the panel of guests, including Fatima Ladjadj, director of Intergénérations Québec, this event promises to be an opportunity to exchange and explore the different avenues for acting and building a society where each generation finds its place and flourished.

In this 1is October, let’s commit to celebrating the valuable contributions of seniors in our homes, communities and workplaces. Let us think about their positive impact and their invaluable contribution to the development of a collective and united future.
