“We have the right to live in public spaces safely, freely and peacefully, without being afraid,” write the signatories.

DISCRIMINATION – “A deafening institutional silence”. This is what around fifty associations and elected officials denounce in the face of the rise in LGBTIphobic attacks in 2024, in a letter addressed to Gabriel Attal. Insults in the street, homophobic tags, physical attacks…

Violence which, according to the letter sent by the Inter-LGBT associative federation, and consulted by AFP, is constantly increasing “both in number and intensity, without the police or justice system becoming alarmed or mobilizing in the face of this worrying phenomenon”. As the Paris Olympics approach, “it’s up to you to decide the image you want to offer to the world”underlines the letter again.

“We have the right to live in public space in safety”

The signatories demand a “systematic and unequivocal condemnation of all forms of violence, hatred and aggression against LGBTQIA+ people, associations and symbols, at the highest level of the State”the identification and creation of a directory of places and acts of LGBTIphobic attacks “to strengthen the protection of people and property”but also the examination of the effective implementation of the National Plan for equality, against hatred and anti-LGBT+ discrimination.

This plan includes training law enforcement, supporting associations, better punishing insults in stadiums and even including same-sex families in school forms.

“We have the right to live in public spaces safely, freely and peacefully, without being afraid”, write the signatories who point out the imminence of important events for the LGBTI community such as Pride month in June which is accompanied by numerous marches throughout France. It will also be marked by the annual report of the SOS Homophobia association. Last year, the latter noted in particular that “the number of cases of transphobia increased by 35% compared to 2020, 27% compared to 2021”. This Sunday, May 5, rallies are also planned throughout France to fight against transphobia.
