Obviously, the oldest will not fail to regret the 1er May of yesteryear, unitary and black people. For this Labor Day, there was no major parade bringing together all the union forces. It is also true that this 1er-May comes after the strong mobilizations of 2023 against pension reform which brought together demonstrators from all walks of life.

Convergence of struggles

The CGT was in charge of the main demonstration which left the station and reached the Labor Exchange passing Cours Briand and Place Ducale. By the looks of it, there were barely more than 200 in the streets of Charleville-Mézières. For example, on avenue Lecerc, the procession did not even occupy the distance between rue Daux and the Locomotive brasserie, at the corner of rue Corneau. And again, over half the width of the roadway.

I have a barometer for mobilization: when I know most of the demonstrators, it is because the slogan has not gone beyond the usual activists.

It prevents. The demonstration made it possible to show a certain convergence of struggles, between CGT, teachers from the FSU and SNU, metallurgists from the CFTC, but also activists from La insoumise, from the Education Without Borders Network which fights for undocumented immigrants, and defenders of the Palestinian cause. Demands for workers and for peace were thus united in the parade. The CGT insisted on “these times of crisis and social breakdown, in a nauseating atmosphere where foreigners, unions, minorities and those who fight for equality and fraternity are singled out. » Adding: “the CGT denounces attacks on collective and individual freedoms, in particular against labor markets and the right to demonstrate, union freedoms, but also obstacles to freedom of expression. »
