Public Notice: September 28 marks “Test Your Smoke Alarms” Day

The provincial government invites all residents to check smoke alarms at home on Saturday, September 28, to mark Canada-wide “Test Your Smoke Alarms” Day.

In the event of a fire, a working smoke detector is the best way to protect you and your family and be “saved by the beep.”

“Saved by the Beep” is a national call to action to ensure that home smoke alarms are in good working order. In Newfoundland and Labrador, smoke alarms must be installed in all rooms of a residence, including cottages, cottages, RVs, mobile homes and second homes.

Last year, approximately 742 fire-related incidents were reported in the province, including residential fires and electrical fires, resulting in the deaths of five people.

“Test Your Smoke Alarms” day is also a good opportunity to check carbon monoxide detectors. These alarms are designed to alert you when there is a presence of high levels of carbon monoxide in your home or residence.

Contact your local fire department if you need assistance or advice regarding your smoke detector. To educate children about the importance of working smoke alarms and for tips on fire safety, visit the Sparky fire dog website at www.sparky.org. You will also find videos, games and other fun activities.
