Football Rouge et Or: all players on the same page for better team chemistry

Better team chemistry was identified by several Rouge et Or players as a key element in the team’s success this season.

With a record of four wins and no losses, their best start since 2018, the Rouge et Or are at the top of the RSEQ rankings. “It’s not night and day with last year,” said co-captain Ian Leroux, “but the chemistry is deeper this season. The players have spent a lot of time together on and off the field and it shows.”

Different goals among the veterans and the presence of many young players can explain a chemistry that was not at its best last year according to Lehoux. “In 2023, there were many young people who did not know what to expect and leaders ready to take a new direction, either in the professional ranks or in the job market, underlined the long-term specialist. The visions were separating.”

“This year, everyone is pushing in the same direction, to add the 4th round pick (37th overall) of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to the last CFL draft. I am happy to be one of the leaders of this team. Credit to the first and second year players who are sponges and who push to continue the history of the Rouge et Or.

Things to prove for the offense

The change is particularly striking on offense as the Rouge et Or are having success with a very similar lineup to 2023 which was a very difficult season.

“It’s difficult to pinpoint a single factor to explain the change,” said receiver Isaac Gaillardetz, “but the cohesion is really good. All the time spent together this summer helps a lot. The 2024 group also had something to prove and it shows that it’s difficult to come back after winning the Vanier Cup.”

Less in demand on the aerial game this year, Gaillardetz, who was the best receiver for the Rouge et Or in 2023, is not complaining about his fate. “Our attack is more diversified and I play a bigger role in the ground game,” he explained. It doesn’t bother me because I wanted to improve this aspect of my game. (Auclair) has an impressive amount of experience and he is patient with us. If I want to make it to the pros, I need to perfect my blocking skills. I’m confident I can catch the ball.”
