This Monday, September 16, 2024, a 20-year-old worker died on one of the construction sites of the Oktoberfest in Munich, which is due to begin in just a few days.

Drama in Germany. Every year, Oktoberfest attracts millions of people who gather to party in the city of Munich, Bavaria. As construction sites for attractions get busy just days before the start of the festivities, a worker working on a roller coaster ride died after being hit by a train, reports Bavarian Radio.

The tragedy took place on Monday while maintenance work was taking place on an attraction called “Olympia looping”, a roller coaster installed on the Theresienwiese, in the city centre.

The victim, who was 20 years old, was violently hit by a test train, which was traveling at full speed, i.e. 90 km/h. The young man then found himself on the tracks and was taken to hospital but could not be resuscitated.

For now, it’s a shock. “In general, we have the highest security standards, but there is no perfect security. We must not be fooled”explained Yvonne Heckl, spokeswoman for the Oktoberfest fairground workers. “It’s a tragic accident. The fact that a young person died is the worst thing,” said Peter Bausch, president of the Munich fairground workers’ association.lamented Peter Bausch, president of the Munich fairground association.

However, the exact circumstances of this tragic accident are still unclear, an investigation has been opened to shed light on this tragedy.

As Oktoberfest begins on September 21, the “Lymica looping” attraction may not open its doors.
