Since its release this Friday April 12, 2024, Stöld is a sensation on Netflix. Adapted from a best-seller, the feature film presents a poignant thriller, inspired by real events and taking place among the Sami people in Finland.

Last Friday, Stöld appeared in the Netflix catalog. Like the novel of the same name, by Ann-Helén Laestadius, of which it is adapted, this feature film from Sweden was a great success upon its release. It only took a few days for it to climb to second place in the Top 10 most watched films on Netflix.

The film transports viewers to the heart of snowy territories where the Sami live, an indigenous people threatened in many ways. There, a woman leads several struggles: those against xenophobia which is gaining ground and climate change which is disrupting their daily lives, centered around reindeer herding. Added to this is another crisis: faced with a future that seems futile, more and more young people are ending their lives.

A thriller where current issues intertwine

On screen, Elin Kristina Oskal lends her features to the heroine who, in parallel with her political battles, is caught in the throes of another, more personal affair. Martin Wallstrom (Mr. Robot), Lars-Ánte Wasara and Magnus Kuhmunen complete the cast. Elle Márjá Eira (The Sámi Have Rights, Ealát), herself a reindeer owner, took care of the production and Peter Birro (Monica Z, 438 Days) of the scenario.

Announced in September 2022, this feature film adaptation is seen by Ann-Helén Laestadius as an additional achievement. ” I’m so happy. For me, as an author, it is of course a dream to see my book made into a film and reach a whole new audience around the world. And I’m incredibly happy that Netflix, with its reach, is choosing to highlight this story.”she explained in a press release released on the occasion.
