On the proposal, by an absolute majority, of the jury of the Cino Del Duca World Prize, chaired by Mrs Hélène Carrère d’Encausse, Permanent Secretary of the French Academy, the Del Duca Foundation Committee, chaired by Xavier Darcos, Chancellor of the Institut de France has awarded the 2023 World Prize, endowed with €200,000, to Duong Thu Huong, paying tribute to a great writer whose exceptional work and personality convey the message of modern humanism recognized by the world prize.
Duong Thu Huong, a committed writer
Hugely popular, both in Vietnam, her country of origin, and abroad, and especially in France, Duong Thu Huong, born in 1947, has published a dozen novels, all translated into French, mainly by Sabine Wespieser publisher . From Terre des oublies (2016), her most read book, to Eucalyptus Hills (2014), via Au zénith (2009), dedicated to the figure of Ho Chi Minh, she describes the daily life of the Vietnamese people, the weight of the past and traditions in a society marked by wars. Created by Simone Del Duca in 1969, the World Prize crowns the career of a French or foreign author whose work constitutes, in scientific or literary form, a message of modern humanism.
Endowed with €200,000, it offers the largest endowment for a literary prize after the Nobel Prize. The jury is made up of 14 members, the majority of whom are members of the Institut de France. The World Prize will be awarded to Duong Thu Huong under the Dome of the Institut de France during the solemn ceremony for the presentation of the Institute’s Foundation Grands Prix, on June 21, 2023.
