« JI told him I wish you would take more, because I'm looking at the whole Gaza Strip right now and it's a disaster, a real disaster. » These words from Donald Trump, spoken aboard the presidential plane Air Force One, summarize a proposal made to King Abdullah II of Jordan: move more than a million Palestinians from Gaza to neighboring countries, notably Jordan and the 'Egypt.

The American president, in a context of humanitarian crisis in Gaza, spoke of his wish to “clean up” in the region, emphasizing that Gaza is a territory devastated by decades of conflict, specifies CNN. He notably suggested that Egypt welcome some of the Palestinians, specifying that this displacement could be “temporary or long-term”. For Trump, the objective is to offer the inhabitants of Gaza a chance to “live in peace for once”, far from the destruction and daily violence.

The proposal emerged after a phone call between Trump and King Abdullah II, a strategic US ally in the region. The American president also announced that he would raise the issue with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi to benefit from his support.

“Clean up Gaza”

Since his inauguration, Donald Trump has made several diplomatic decisions in favor of Israel, such as lifting sanctions against Israeli settlers in the West Bank and resuming the sale of heavy bombs to the Jewish state, thus strengthening his support for Tel- Aviv.

However, the proposal to massively displace Palestinians from Gaza provokes contrasting reactions. An approach reminiscent of the statements of his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, who, in 2024, suggested “cleaning up” Gaza and moving its inhabitants there, recalls CNN.
