A section of the travelling support were heard making chants towards the home crowd regarding the death of Queen Elizabeth II during their Conference League clash at Stamford Bridge.

A UEFA spokesperson told the Irish Independent that the “anti-monarchy chants” were “transmitting a message that is not fit for a sports event.”

UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body have now fined the Tallaght club €10,000, while Chelsea have also received a €10,000 fine after some of their fans responded with “IRA themed chants” during the December 19th match, which Chelsea won 5-1.

Rovers have also been hit with an €8,000 fine after some supporters threw rolls of paper onto the pitch inside the first ten minutes as Christopher Nkunku attempted to take a corner, resulting in the game being delayed briefly.

Last October, a small minority of Rovers supporters were also heard making IRA-related chants during their 4-1 Conference League win over Larne at Windsor Park, although no fines were issued by UEFA in the wake of that game in Belfast.

The club were fined €8,000 by UEFA last August due to encroachment on the pitch by a fan during their Champions League qualifier at home to Sparta Prague.

Stephen Bradley’s side fell to a 5-1 defeat to Chelsea in that final League Phase clash last month and finished tenth in the 36-team league table. Their prize pot stands at €5.5 million and is set to rise further. Last month’s west London clash was Chelsea’s sixth win from six as they topped the table and progressed directly to the last 16.

Rovers will face five-time Norwegian champions Molde in a play-off for a spot in the last 16, with the first-leg away on February 13 before the second-leg takes place at Tallaght Stadium seven days later. The winner will go on to face either Legia Warsaw (Poland) or Cercle Brugge (Belgium) in the last 16 in March.

Those two huge February ties will also come either side of Rovers’ league opener against rivals Bohemians, with both sides kicking off the 2025 season in a landmark clash at Lansdowne Road on Sunday, February 16.

Shamrock Rovers made no comment when contacted by the Irish Independent.
