What Trump will do immediately after taking office: all the dossiers

(Massimo Gaggi and Viviana Mazza, our correspondent) Immediately after the inauguration ceremony today at noon in the Campidoglio (at 6pm in Italy), Donald Trump has promised that he will sign “dozens of executive orders, almost a hundred” as well as rescinding Joe Biden's executive orders, including directives on diversity, equity and inclusion, and removing his predecessor's limits on drilling in federal lands and waters.

The new president says he wants to proceed at pace and promises interventions in dozens of sectors to be implemented in the first hundred days of this second mandatebut there is no doubt that the emphasis is above all on tariffs and immigration. The latter is the issue to which the electorate has proven to be most sensitive, while tariffs, according to Trump the most beautiful word in the vocabulary, certainly represent the topic that he is most passionate about: because it is the terrain that enhances his abilities of dealmakers and because the enormous trade deficit that the United States has accumulated against China and also Europe lives as a shame to be washed away.

Trump 2.0 therefore promises to be an era of revolutionary changesreckless: expulsions (illegal immigrants out of the country and public employees out of federal jobs) and accelerations (other tax cuts, deregulation, green light for cryptocurrencies and the even more intense exploitation of fossil fuels, setting aside all the policies to contain the changes climate) which according to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will pave the way for a new golden age, while for critics of Trumpnomics they risk derailing an economy today robust and healthy, even if citizens, who are still suffering from the price increases accumulated in the two years after the pandemic, do not consider it as such.

Abroad, in his second debut on the world stage, the new president will try to use the greater credit he enjoys and his proverbial unpredictability to push Israelis and Arabs to find a solution for Palestine after having consolidated the truce in Gaza (with the far right and Netanyahu himself perhaps regretting having placed so many expectations in him), will attempt an arduous agreement with Xi Jinping and it will set up a dialogue with Putin which is more difficult than expected.

IMMIGRATION

AND the most delicate dossier: Trump has promised to kick out all 11 million illegal immigrants (he says there are many more) and he cannot take great steps backwards because that is the issue for which his electorate shows it has the most sensitivity. So, immediate departure: according to previews, he will already declare an emergency on the border with Mexico today and will classify the drug cartels as terrorist organizations. Then deportations to various cities with programs that were probably as spectacular as they were limited. The first target is illegal immigrants who have committed criminal offences, the easiest to deport. There will also be raids, probably limited because they bring with them the two risks that Trump should avoid: sending away illegal immigrants who have been working for years, don't cause problems, have become an essential part of the production system and pay taxes and separating families with the desperation of children separated from their parents captured by the cameras of all the television networks.
