Last week, the police arrested thirty compatriots in various places in Mauritius, where they were working without proper papers.

Hunting illegal immigrants in Mauritius. Thirty Malagasy men and women were arrested by local police over the past week. They are being prosecuted for illegal residence and also worked on the island without proper documents.

On Monday January 13, in Goodlands, nine of them, all women, were flushed out in a guest house, according to the news site ionnews.mu. “The nine women were placed in detention pending repatriation. This arrest was made for non-compliance with regulations on the stay of foreigners on Mauritius,” reports the same source.

A joint police operation was carried out two days later. That Wednesday, a raid was carried out in a restaurant located on Route Saint-Jean in Quatre-Bornes, according to TopFM. The owner of the establishment was fined for having hired seventeen foreigners without a permit. Twelve of its employees are Malagasy, including seven women and five men. The others are Bangladeshis.

The same day, other interventions took place, in Candos and on the Royal Road in Providence, where five other Malagasy people were checked and arrested.

“Trou-aux-Biches police also arrested four Malagasy people in the region, who have been in an illegal situation since last year,” reports Lemauricien.com.

Many foreigners have been arriving in Mauritius since the island opened its doors to workers. Some came there on student visas and reside there permanently, even after their documents expire. They come from Madagascar, Niger, Bangladesh and India.

Illegal immigrants have also benefited from this immigration linked to jobs. Doing daily work, they play cat and mouse with the police. Others have already been turned away. Added to this worrying situation are the scams involving fictitious job offers offered by so-called recruiters or agencies, and the various exploitations suffered by workers who reached Mauritius by illegal means.
