We weren’t compelling enough

Kees van Wonderen:

In the first half we didn’t play to our standard, Braunschweig really struggled, so we didn’t have much space. We were better in the game after the break, so a compliment to the team for improving so much in the game. We had more composure on the ball, were able to move the ball more quickly and create some opportunities. But after the red card it became even more difficult because the opponent then completely fell back and defended with everything. If we end the game evenly matched, I am convinced that we will score the goal. So maybe a bit of luck was needed to win.

Braunschweig coach Daniel Scherning:

We had a hard-fought first half, with a lot of play between the penalty areas without much opportunity. We always put good pressure on Schalke’s build-up game. Unfortunately we didn’t manage to carry that into the second half and with the red card we finally got the acknowledgment of the drop in performance. After that it was just a matter of keeping the score and defending our goal. I can only give my team a big compliment, everyone went a long way and put everything into it, and the fans gave us great support in the final quarter of an hour.

Kenan Karaman:

-

The first half wasn’t good, we played too slowly and shifted to the sides too slowly. After the break we were able to take control of the game and had more speed, even before the red card. Unfortunately we weren’t compelling enough. But every point is good for us, we have now been unbeaten in four games, which also gives us self-confidence. We now have two home games ahead of us in which we want to score three points. With the fans behind us, we can expect intense games and we want to improve our home record.

Tobias Mohr:

I would have been happy if we had scored the goal instead of having the majority. We didn’t play well in the first half, it wasn’t the style of play we’ve developed over the past few weeks. After the break we did a lot better, even when we had the majority we created opportunities, although not 100%. Next week we have to show the necessary composure right from the start and show composure on the ball.
