The Canadian James Crawford opened the super-G with a time of 1:48.27, and then with number 3 he overtook him by as much as 62 hundredths with a flawless ride Franjo von Allmenone of the Swiss discoveries of winter. The master of super-giant slaloms came close to him by just a tenth Vincent Kriechmayrwho excellently drove the target S.
But on paper, the best no longer threatened the leadership of the 23-year-old from the village of Boltigen, who grew up on a farm in the mountains of central Switzerland.
“I want to make a name for myself. It’s nice to hear the comparisons with Marc Odermatt, but I want to go my own way,” von Allmen let it be known that this was just the beginning. “I want to have fun again tomorrow,” von Allmen added. The Swiss won the three skis so far, which is why a record attendance is predicted in Wengen.
The order at the top was mixed only by the Swiss Stefan Rogentin (+0.58), which earned Crawford a place on the podium by four hundredths. An extraordinary ride by the 30-year-old, who took a nasty fall in training, but managed to pull it off without any consequences.
Odermatt “le” sedmi
The Swiss were holding their breath until the appearance of the first star Odermatta brandwho lost almost a second in the middle part and finished in 7th place.
Despite the ideal winter conditions, however, the early start numbers proved to have an advantage as the snow surface became progressively slower due to the heavy snow. He also skis the fastest in training sessions Ryan Cochran Siegle with the number 18, he could not get more than eleventh place. Cameron Alexander, the winner of the first training session, came even higher in eighth place.
Six hundredths behind 30th place
Among the 57 alpine skiers from 14 countries, there were also two Slovenians on the start list, but they did not have favorable numbers.
Martin Čater with the number 39, he was among the slower ones on the sunny parts, so he took the target S encouragingly for Saturday’s downhill. With a gap of 2.96, he took the 39th place.
Miha Hrobat with number 48, on the contrary, he was competitive in the upper part, he was the slowest in the fourth of the five sections, and at the finish, he missed valuable World Cup points by only six hundredths (+2.38) in 31st place, which would have improved starting point in the super giant slalom.
No disappointment, expectations are much higher for the downhill
“Unfortunately, we didn’t win any points, but we still can’t be disappointed. Miha was very competitive for his starting number almost to the finish line. A little before the finish line, he made a mistake, which cost him a place in the top 30. Today, the track was drowned so much that it no longer allowed for good skating. Now we are looking towards the downhill, where we will have better numbers,” said the coach of the Slovenian national team, Aleš Brezavšček.
Fourth different winner
World Cup leader Odermatt won the first super-G in Beaver Creek, the Italian Mattia Casse won the second in Val Gardena, and the Norwegian Fredrik Møller won the third in Bormio. The Swiss have now won five out of seven races in the fast disciplines of alpine skiing.
On Saturday at 12:30 p.m. there will be a classic downhill on the Lauberhorn course, then on Sunday there will be a slalom on the Männlichen slope (10:15 a.m./1:15 p.m.).
