In the upcoming episode of ‘Sergio Over De Grens’, Sergio Herman will travel with Wesley Sonck (46) to Armenia. We all know Wesley as an ex-professional Football player, but he still does not look back on his career with satisfaction.
Wesley Sonck, a name that even people who are not football fans know. The man scored no fewer than 24 goals for our national team. Football is therefore a subject that top chef Sergio Herman cannot avoid during their trip to Armenia. Although the football analyst and former professional footballer apparently does not look back on his successful career with satisfaction.
Missed
‘I once received an offer from Seville, I really wanted to play football in Spain. I also had the chance to play in England. But for many reasons, that never really became concrete. I think that is a loss’, says Wesley while they have a view of a breathtaking mountain landscape.
His career also ended in a not-so-great way. ‘You do what you like to do and suddenly someone says: we are not going to give you a contract anymore because you are too old‘, says Wesley. ‘Then I said: “If this is it, then I will decide to stop.” That wasn’t easy. What’s next? You are no longer allowed to do what you are good at.’
Overwhelming
In the years after his career, he presented ‘The Container Cup’ together with Pedro Elias. A super popular program in which Belgian top athletes and some BVs competed against each other in a heptathlon. “The response I received was overwhelming,” he says. ‘I didn’t expect that. I thought: wow, I can still do something! Even though I didn’t know that.’
You can see ‘Sergio Over De Grens’ every Wednesday at 8:40 PM on VTM and VTM GO.
