COUPE DE – A heartbreaker: OM already out, knocked out on penalties by LOSC (1-1, 3-4 TAB)

emerges victorious from the clash of the round of 16 of the Coupe de at the Stade Vélodrome. At the end of a tense match, neither team was decided after regulation time. LOSC opened the scoring in the second half thanks to Hakon Haraldsson (70th) but the Phocéens did not give up and came back to the level thanks to a clear strike from Luis Henrique (90th + 7). But the nerves of the Marseillais gave way during the penalty shootout won by Lille (3-4), who will see the round of 16.

Haraldsson cools the Vélodrome

OM aimed to win a trophy this season under the leadership of Roberto de Zerbi. The Coupe de France was a goal and this match against Lille served as a test for the Phocéens. With five victories in the last six matches, the Marseillais had difficulty getting started against Lille who were well established.

Mason Greenwood tried well, like this low cross towards Luis Henrique, perfectly defended by Gabriel Gudmundsson who prevented the first goal of the match (8th). The English winger, in all the good shots, first tested Vito Mannone’s gloves with a dry strike (36th) then took advantage of a clever serve from Adrien Rabiot to lob Mannone. His shot was pushed by Neal Maupay into the empty goal, but with his hand, and the goal was therefore logically canceled (39th).

The Dogues, so lacking in bite in the first period, regained their appetite after returning from the locker room. Mitchel Bakker thought he would open the scoring on a serve from Jonathan David, but the Dutchman in turn saw his goal canceled for a hand fault (46th). It was ultimately Hakon Haraldsson who broke the deadlock in the match based on a model of collective action initiated by Thomas Meunier. The Belgian served David in the area, his cross was perfectly taken by the Icelandic international (70th).

Henrique saves the Om, and buries him

With their heads underwater, the Marseillais had to react in front of their audience but above all suffered from the Lille counterattacks which could have doubled the score if Haraldsson had better managed his face-to-face against Jeffrey De Lange (88th). LOSC missed its chance, OM first relied on Greenwood who with a clear strike found Mannone’s left post (90th + 3), before at the end of added time, Luis Henrique takes an unstoppable shot to equalize (90th+7).

Euphoric, the Phocéens certainly lost too much energy before setting off during the penalty shootout. LOSC converted everything, Luis Henrique and Jonathan Rowe came up against Mannone, who described Lille as more realistic than their opponent.
