DFrom January 1994 to June 1999, Philippe Vilain was the lover of Annie Ernaux (2022 Nobel Prize). When they met, he was 24 years old, she was 53. Marked by his father's alcoholism, Vilain grew up in a working-class city, had failed at school for a long time, but, now a literature student, he is in train, without money, without reference points, to masterfully influence his destiny.

At the time, recognized for her powerful autobiographical stories, Ernaux was a writer who was already financially comfortable, the highly publicized and politicized champion of so-called “truth” literature. This connection is moreover, even before ending, the subject of several works by Annie Ernaux to which Vilain, who is himself a writer, responds from time to time with texts obviously much less read than this…
