Ange Postecoglou has named Timo Werner in his Tottenham team to take on Tamworth on Sunday while Mikey Moore also returns.
Spurs are in FA Cup third-round action at the Lamb Ground on 12 January, with Chris Sutton having shared a sensational prediction ahead of the match.
Postecoglou will know anything less than a convincing victory would be unacceptable, and his future at the club could even hinge on Spurs’ performance today.
This has been reflected in his team selection, which is more or less Spurs’ current strongest 11.
However, the decision to start Werner, as confirmed via the club’s official X account (12 January), could cost Postecoglou.
Ange Postecoglou starts Timo Werner for Tottenham in Tamworth
Postecoglou has taken a big risk by naming such a strong side, especially with the current injury situation at the club. Many expected the manager to rotate, and players to be handed debuts.
However, Postecoglou is clearly feeling the pressure and has named a strong team as a result, although Werner’s inclusion could backfire on the Australian.
In the 2-1 Premier League defeat to Newcastle at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (4 January), Werner’s last start for the club, the German failed to provide an accurate cross from three attempts and won just 25 per cent of his ground duels [Sofascore].
In addition, he failed with his one dribble attempt and only completed 83 per cent of his passes, with none of those key, while also failing to register a shot and being dribbled past twice.
Therefore, Postecoglou will need to see a lot more from Werner against Tamworth if Spurs are to win convincingly and ease the pressure on the 59-year-old.
