Girona starts in 2025 in Mendizorroza

After the Christmas break the league returns, and Girona will start the year visiting Alavés. Míchel Sánchez’s men will try to continue the good results against a rival who this season is not managing to find consistency, and who with seventeen points is only two above relegation. In the last duel of 2024 they tied at Mestalla (2-2), and they had also done so in the three previous league games. The Basques have not won since the beginning of November, and despite starting the league well, it has been difficult for them to maintain the good line of results as the days go by. Even so, they are the tenth highest scoring team in the category, despite the fact that their defensive aspect penalizes them, and with thirty conceded they are the ones that receive the most goals.

The proper names of Alavés

Leading the team is Eduardo Coudet, who replaced Luis Garía Plaza in December. Since his arrival Coudet has not yet lost, but he has not won either. Three draws leading the team, all of them with goals, against Osasuna, Athletic Club and Valencia. Kike García is the team’s top scorer with five goals, and he is followed by Carlos Vicente and Toni Martínez with three. Guridi, Jordán and Carlos Martín have scored two more goals, and up to four more players have scored.

The precedents

Alavés and Girona have faced each other 27 times, with a favorable balance for the Catalans of eleven victories, seven draws and nine defeats. Last year the match ended in a 2-2 draw with two goals from Èric Garcia and Yangel Herrera, and in Montilivi the Girona team won by a resounding 3-0. Míchel’s team, however, has had a hard time getting good results in Mendizorroza, and they have only been able to win twice and draw four in the thirteen visits they have made.
