Another test for the Mahorais. The island, which was hit hard in December by Cyclone Chido, and where everything remains to be rebuilt, went into cyclone pre-alert this Friday morning at 8 a.m. due to a “severe tropical storm”, announced the prefect of Mayotte in a press release. “Météo Indian Ocean is monitoring a low pressure system, called Dikeledi, which will cross Madagascar this Saturday at the end of the day, can we read in the press release. Dikeledi should transit 140 km south of Mayotte during the day on Sunday.

This storm “would translate [sur le territoire] by a degradation of time”, adds the prefecture, or “heavy, discontinuous precipitation from Saturday evening and until the night of Sunday to Monday, accumulating 150 mm over 12 hours”, “winds which will gradually strengthen to reach 50-60 km/h on average and gusts of 90-100 km/h” et “a risk of marine submersion on the coasts given the tide level and the state of the sea”.

Under these conditions, the prefecture calls on residents to “precautionary and prudent measures” : fix objects and obstacles “likely to constitute dangers or projectiles”, cancel their outings, particularly at sea, planned for this weekend, to have margin for their drug treatments or to prepare reserves of lighting and water. In the poorest department in France, where precarious housing dominates and a large part of the inhabitants have lost their homes and still have difficulty getting supplies, not sure that stocking up is really that easy.

The State representation on site also advised people with renal or respiratory failure to contact “without delay” their usual healthcare facility.
