LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – With numerous Lexington roads covered in snow and ice, sidewalks are also buried by it.
Alfred Hall is one of numerous Lexington residents trying to clear off his driveway and eventually make it to clear off his sidewalk.
“I’ve probably been at it a half hour, 45 minutes maybe, and then I’ll go another half hour and 45 minutes then take a break,” Hall said.
A Lexington city ordinance says residents must clear their own sidewalks when more than four inches of snow has fallen and their streets have been plowed.
It also states that sidewalks must be cleared within 24 hours after a snow event has happened.
“The mailman oughta be able to get to the mail and the garbage man oughta be able to get to the garbage, and people oughta be able to pass by your house without trekking through snow and ice,” Hall said.
Luckily for Hall, Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton has postponed the requirement for property owners to clear sidewalks since it can be especially dangerous for folks to do so during these conditions.
But it’s unfortunate for people like Delanee Potts, who was trying to walk to CVS.
“It’s just been really weird because everything under is frozen, so every time you take a step, you like fall through. I don’t really think the snow is the problem, I think the ice is. I almost slipped a few times walking up here,” Potts said.
Lexington officials say although sidewalks can be difficult to walk on right now, folks should never walk in the roadways.
“It poses a serious risk to drivers as well as yourself as a pedestrian,” said Director of the Lexington Division of Streets and Roads Rob Allen.
