Political crisis in Canada: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau resigns! : News

The Canadian Prime Minister announced his resignation on Monday January 6, during a speech broadcast live on television Monday January 6. Justin Trudeau had been facing a serious political crisis for several weeks and voices were being raised against him within his own party.

It's official! The Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, has decided to resign. He himself announced it live on television after the daily The Globe and Mail indicated that his departure was imminent. A minority in Parliament, Justin Trudeau was no longer able to convince within his own party, and continued to lose ground in the polls against his conservative rival, Pierre Poilievre.

“I intend to resign as Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada and Prime Minister once the party has chosen its next leader following a rigorous and competitive national process”declared Justin Trudeau. “I asked the party chairman to begin the necessary steps. The country deserves a clear and real choice in the next elections. It has become clear to me that if I have to focus on internal battles, I cannot be the best option during these elections”he then admitted.

Justin Trudeau's speech comes just before his party's national meeting, which is to be held this Wednesday, January 8. This departure leaves the party without direction as the legislative elections approach, which must take place before the end of October.

Justin Trudeau even more weakened since the re-election of Donald Trump

Justin Trudeau, who had indicated his wish to run for a new mandate, is well ahead of his conservative opponent, Pierre Poilievre, with more than 20 points behind in the polls. He is also in the minority in Parliament, weakened by the departure of his left-wing ally and growing discontent within his own camp. He is thus going through the most serious political crisis since his accession to power nine years ago.

The situation is particularly chaotic in Ottawa since the unexpected resignation of Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, who opposed Trudeau over the management of the looming economic war with the United States.

Donald Trump's recent statements have exacerbated this political crisis in Canada, amplifying tensions. The country is preparing to face threats from the future American president, who announced his intention to impose customs tariffs of 25% on Canada and Mexico as soon as he regains power in January.
