Malaysia has seen a notable expansion in its pineapple export market, with France and New Zealand being the newest additions to its international customer base. According to Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali, chairman of the Pineapple Industry Council of Malaysia, export volume increased significantly last year, with shipments increasing from 800 to 1,778 containers. This increase highlights the global acceptance of Malaysian pineapples, supported by technological advancements that extend freshness during export.
The value of pineapple exports reached about US$203 million (RM899 million) in September last year. Pending year-end figures, the Council expects the total export value to exceed US$225 million (RM1 billion). This forecast follows a record production of more than 100,440 metric tons during the same year, exceeding the initial target of 85,000 metric tons. The increase in production has been attributed to the expansion of large-scale plantations by various conglomerates.
In addition, the area devoted to pineapple cultivation increased by 1,674 hectares, reaching 18,275.7 hectares. This growth not only contributes to Malaysia's economy, but also promises substantial income for local farmers. Under the 11th Malaysia Plan, the target is for 80% of pineapple farmers to earn more than $1,125 (RM5,000) per month, with the ambition to increase this to $1,800 (8 000 RM) in the future.
Going forward, Sarawak aims to expand its pineapple plantation area to 20,000 hectares by 2030, following an increase of 228 hectares last year. This expansion plan, approved by Sarawak Prime Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, makes Sarawak a key player in achieving Malaysia's ambitious pineapple production and export targets.
