Thérèse Detcheverry, better known under the first name Louisa, was the guardian angel of sailors here and elsewhere. Manager of a grocery store, she provided countless services to the inhabitants of Miquelon, Langlade, Saint-Pierre and Newfoundland thanks to her VHF. She died on Friday January 3 at the age of 84.
Thérèse Detcheverry, better known as Louisa in Miquelon, passed away this Friday, January 3 at the age of 84. This very discreet trader has been at the service of the sailors of the archipelago, the residents of Langade and also the Newfoundlanders all her life or almost.
Thanks to her VHF, a communication tool that Louisa used very often, she saved lives. Decorated with the National Order of Maritime Merit in June 2021, the new pilot station star bears his name.

Denis Detcheverry, former mayor of the commune of Miquelon-Langlade, remembers a day when he broke down with his boat near Newfoundland. “Very bad at communicating in English, I called Louisa in Miquelon who, with her Cibi, was the relay on Newfoundland. Canadians who sent me a fisherman to tow me onto Fortune“.
I owe him a debt of gratitude like many people in the archipelago and in Newfoundland.

For Jean De Lizarraga, former mayor of the town “his disappearance is a loss for the village“. He also says that Louisa was “a trader serving the population“.
Louisa's small convenience store was open from 8-9 a.m. to 8-10 p.m.
