Belouizdad coach Abdelkader Amrani has underlined the importance of defensive solidity and focus as his team prepares for a do-or-die clash against Al Ahly in the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League.
Belouizdad head into Friday’s group stage clash against the Egyptian giants with their qualification hopes on the line.
After a crushing 6-1 defeat in the reverse fixture in Cairo, the Algerian side is determined to turn the tide at the July 5 Stadium in Algiers and keep their campaign alive.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference on Thursday, Amrani stressed the need to avoid conceding goals and described the encounter as a must-win for his side to stay in contention for qualification.
“We have to deliver a complete performance, and our first priority is to keep a clean sheet,” Amrani stated.
“Our fate is in our hands, and we have no choice but to win this match if we are to remain in the race.”
Reflecting on their humbling 6-1 defeat in the reverse fixture in Cairo, Amrani admitted that a lack of focus had let his team down.
However, he urged his players to rise to the occasion and show their resilience. “What hurt me the most was our performance. But in football, these things happen. Tomorrow, we must not doubt our ability to win and show a new face.”
Amrani also addressed recent issues with veteran striker Islam Slimani, confirming that the situation had been resolved.
“As a coach, I make decisions for the team’s benefit, which may not always please everyone. But I spoke with Slimani recently, and things are back to normal. His experience can add a lot to the team.”
Belouizdad striker Aymen Mahyous reinforced the message of unity and determination, highlighting the importance of Friday’s match for their campaign.
“We aim to restore our reputation by defeating Al Ahly and securing the three points,” Mahyous said.
“This is a crucial match for us to stay in the qualification race.”
With the support of their fans at the July 5 Stadium, Belouizdad will be looking to overcome the odds against the group leaders and reignite their TotalEnergies CAF Champions League hopes.
