The ousted president of South Korea, Yoon Suk-yeol, resists his arrest for a third day in a row. Thursday January 2, opponents and supporters gathered in front of his home.
Yoon Suk-yeol took refuge in the presidential palace after his failed coup attempt. He refuses to be arrested by the police despite the arrest warrant issued against him. A few meters away, hundreds of his supporters mobilized to prevent his arrest. “This arrest warrant is illegal, the country is in a state of civil war and anarchy,” declared one of the supporters of the deposed president.
Police buses protect Yoon Suk-yeol's supporters. On the other side of the avenue, those who want the arrest of the putschist president. “Suspensing the president’s powers is not enough. He must stand trial and be punished for what he did,” said a protester. As a reminder, on December 3, the conservative president prevented parliament from sitting by declaring martial law. After a night of demonstrations, the head of state backed down and parliamentarians voted for his dismissal. The police have promised to execute this arrest warrant before next Monday.
