A three-day national mourning was declared by the Prime Minister of Montenegro after the shooting which took place this Wednesday, January 1, leaving at least 10 dead.

An armed man killed at least ten people this Wednesday, January 1, in different locations in Cetinje, a small town in Montenegro, police said, adding that the suspect killed himself after being surrounded by police.

The assailant, identified as Aleksandar Martinovic, 45, opened fire in a restaurant in the city, killing four people, before going to three other locations where he killed six more people, including two children. Four other people injured by bullets are in critical condition, police added.

It was one of the deadliest shootings in the history of the small Balkan country.

According to the local police director, the suspect was drunk at the time of the incident. The shooting is not believed to be linked to organized crime, authorities said.

Prime Minister Milojko Spajic said a fight broke out and weapons were then pulled out. Referring to a “terrible tragedy”, he declared three days of national mourning.
