A weather expert has given his verdict on snow hitting the UK over the coming hours and days, as well as just how cold it could get in parts of the country.
The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings across different parts of the UK.
As temperatures continue to plunge, with snow expected across the country, founder and senior meteorological consultant at British Weather Services, Jim Dale, believes we could be heading into the coldest part of the winter period yet.
Speaking to Express.co.uk, the weather expert said “by this evening, we’ll all [the UK] be in the cold air,” with the Arctic blast coming straight from the north and clearing the south coast.
He added: “What we call a pole of front, the division between Arctic air and temperate air will be to the south of the UK by the time we go into the overnight.
“That being said, that means we are in the cold regime of weather, and we will stay there for the most part, and we still stay there probably, arguably, until mid-month.”
With the drastic change in conditions, Britain should expect to see snow hit various areas in the coming days, and according to the expert, by Monday, “three-quarters” of the country will be covered.
He continued: “I think most of the UK will start to see some of the white stuff as we go through Sunday to Monday and some of that [snow] into the Midlands, the north particularly as it gets far up into the more colder air, will be quite deep.”
Derbyshire, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, Lancashire, Manchester, and North Wales are just some of the places that will be covered, according to the senior meteorological consultant.
Further South and West, the air is expected to be milder. However, “it is still going to go into cold air”, meaning although it might not be as cold as up north, temperatures could still plunge below freezing in regions, and “see a mixture of rain, sleet and snow.”
He added the UK is entering “the coldest phase of the winter”, and people should be cautious all the way into the mid-month, where the mild air in the west and south-west could again turn into cold air and produce more snow, but as well we could see a case of ice in areas and “seriously low temperatures.”
While most of the country is likely to see temperatures plummet to between -2C and -4C, areas such as The Glens could see temperatures nosedive to as low as -16C.
Weather conditions like these can cause serious transport disruptions as well as health concerns as people are prone to have accidents from slipping on ice so it is important to regularly check weather updates before going out.
