Several babies were born in Switzerland on January 1st.

The New Year’s baby in 2025 could be a boy from the canton of Thurgau.
-
He was born just 47 minutes after midnight.
Where does the Swiss New Year baby come from? Presumably from the canton of Thurgau: The Münsterlingen Cantonal Hospital reported the birth of Nael Isaías at 12:47 a.m. The boy weighed 2,850 grams at birth and was 48 centimeters tall.
At 12:57 a.m., the first child of 2025 was born in the Zurich Triemli City Hospital, as the hospital announced upon request. The boy comes from the city of Zurich, measures 52 centimeters and weighs 3950 grams.
The boy does not currently have a name, but he will be given the name of an ancestor later, as is usual in the family. His brother was born five years ago on January 1st in the Triemli Hospital – but in the evening, which is why he was barely enough to have a New Year’s baby.
Short birth
“Now we have a New Year’s baby in our family,” the boy’s mother is quoted as saying in the press release. She didn’t come to Triemli until 10:30 p.m., and the newest family member was born a little later. “It was a beautiful, calm birth,” said the mother. “I felt very well supported and looked after, the new premises of the Triemli maternity department are incredibly beautiful and modern.”
Other hospitals are also reporting several New Year’s babies. Lars was born in the Obwalden Cantonal Hospital at 2:51 a.m. “The birth was special because Lars was born spontaneously in the breech position – an event that is rare in modern births,” the hospital writes in a media release.
A girl named Layla Rose was born at 1:45 a.m. in the Zug Cantonal Hospital. The girl is 50 cm tall and weighs 2945 grams. Wetzikon Hospital also reports a New Year’s baby: little Abinaya was born at 3:31 a.m. It is 48 centimeters tall and weighs 3080 grams. This is the second child for the family.
Further media inquiries from other hospitals are still pending.
Elena is the Solothurn New Year’s baby 2025
Elena Spycher was born on January 1st at 3:10 a.m. and is therefore the Solothurn New Year’s baby of 2025. Mother and child are doing well, as the hospital reports.
In total, Solothurner Spitäler AG (soH) counted 1,582 newborns in its two maternity departments at the Solothurn Citizens’ Hospital and the Olten Cantonal Hospital in 2024. In the previous year there were 1,556 births and in 2022 there were 1,536 births. The birth figures in 2024 have increased slightly compared to the previous year. This contradicts the birth trend in Switzerland: According to the Federal Statistical Office, 2.9 percent fewer children were born in the first nine months of last year than in the same period last year.
First place in the Baden Cantonal Hospital goes to Lani
Lani secured first place in the birth register of the Baden Cantonal Hospital in 2025. She was born on January 1st at 2:28 a.m., weighed 3,290 grams and was 51 centimeters long. Her birth took a little longer than usual because Lani was a so-called stargazer.
This term comes from the fact that the baby holds its head so that the face is facing upwards, i.e. towards the mother’s stomach, instead of towards the back. In other words, the unborn baby looks up at the sky (at the stars) when the mother gives birth in a supine position. This position is not ideal for giving birth. The problem is that the baby’s head needs so much more space to fit through the birth canal. This can make the birth significantly more difficult for mother and child.
“Stargazer” was able to change the situation
However, with a little luck, stargazers can change their situation. With targeted exercises, the KSB birth team managed to get Lani into the correct position, so that the birth ultimately went ahead without any significant problems.
While the parents were happy about their first child, the doctors and midwives only had a short break: at 7.30 a.m. the second baby of the new year saw the light of day at KSB. This rhythm continued throughout the day: on the afternoon of January 1, 2025, the KSB birth register already included five new citizens.
