The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates in the Syrian Republic revealed a phone call between Asaad Al-Shaibani, the Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs, and his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita.
The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Nasser Bourita stressed Morocco’s support for the Syrian people, its support for Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, the commonalities between the two countries, and the necessity of strengthening diplomatic relations to serve common interests.
This call is considered an announcement of the return of relations between Morocco and Syria, which were cut off for a long time and experienced ebbs and flows due to the Syrian regime’s support for the separatist Polisario Front.
But with the new leadership, and its welcoming of the reopening of the Moroccan embassy in Damascus, relations between the two countries may witness a new chapter in the future that will put an end to Syria’s position on the side of the separatists, especially with the official Algerian position expressed by Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf when he stressed that his country recognizes states, not governments. .
According to informed sources, Morocco is determined to reopen its embassy in Damascus in mid-January after the talks Bourita held with his Syrian counterpart, although this decision requires further study and preparation.
The Kingdom of Morocco maintained its diplomatic approach of non-interference in the affairs of other countries, and dealt with the events that Syria witnessed in 2012 with great skill. It took a clear distance from the regime, closed its embassy after the escalation witnessed on Syrian territory, and rejected foreign intervention in Syria.
The same position was expressed by Morocco after the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, as Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita affirmed that Morocco hopes that the developments will bring stability to the Syrian people.
